Travelling around the world is such an inspiring and exciting thing to do, but modern technology means that we can miss out on the authentic experience nowadays. How many travellers do you see Googling where to eat or taking selfies at every opportunity? If you want to take it back to basics then here are some tips for getting an authentic travel experience.

Pick the right place

Try to avoid tourist traps if you want to enjoy a more authentic travel experience. While places like Bruges are beautiful, they’re also packed full of tourists, according to The Secret Traveller blog over on 1Cover. In fact, there are plenty of tourist attractions which are plain old disappointing, simply because they’re full to the brim with other travellers. Head off the beaten track and look for destinations that aren’t deemed to be popular. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy the travel experience without millions of other tourists.

Put down your phone

It seems as though most of us are glued to our phones nowadays – it’s become a real addiction! It’s not uncommon to see travellers queuing up at a landmark, just to get the best Instagram shots. While taking photos can be a fun way to document your trip, don’t spend your whole time looking through a lens. You’ll see so much more if you just put your phone down and look up.

Do it on a shoestring

Staying in luxury hotels can be fun when you’re on holiday, but if you want to travel authentically then try stripping back the budget. It’s easier than you think to travel on a budget, as long as you plan carefully. This means that you’ll have to think outside of the box when it comes to things like getting around a new city, accommodation choices, and even where you eat. Swap the swanky restaurants for street food for a real taste of the city. Swap a hotel for a hostel to meet new people. And try getting around on the local bus, instead of a taxi!

Talk to the locals

One of the best things you can do during your travels is make friends with the locals. These are the people who’ll know all of the hidden gems in their area, from places to go hiking through to the best places to eat and drink.

For the most part, especially if you’re not in a heavily tourist-centric area, the locals will be more than happy to talk to you and show you around. Embrace learning all about a new culture for a really authentic experience.

Learn a language

Finally, if you want to immerse yourself in your travel experience then you’re going to want to learn a new language. Not everyone will speak English wherever you go, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Research which languages are the most spoken in whichever part of the world you’re visiting and try to teach yourself some common phrases. There are also plenty of apps that will help you learn the basics.

These top tips should help you enjoy a more authentic travel experience, wherever you’re heading! Do you have any others to add to the list? Let us know in the comments.
