Endless food, endless crowd; that’s how we see it. It’s an indication of how good things are at Promenade Cafe, Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu. Lavish selection and generous spread versus affordable price; perhaps that is the best comparison we can think of to best describe the International Dinner Buffet at Promenade Cafe. Every Saturday and Public Holidays, the International Dinner Buffet features Whole Roast Lamb, creating that endless bee-line (of diners).
Whole Roast Lamb
At RM98.00 per person, one can have access to every inch of Promenade Cafe’s generous spread at all buffet counters and that includes the Live Cooking Stations located just outside the Cafe. On Saturdays evening (and Public Holidays), diners will flock to the Whole Roast Lamb Station, hoping to get the best part of it.
It’s not a secret or whatsoever, regulars knows how great the Whole Roast Lamb is. The Chefs here ensures that the taste and texture are their top priorities when cooking that Whole Roast Lamb. It’s not an ordinary Whole Roast Lamb, it’s being cooked meticulously, to perfection!
We were able to savor the great dishes served during last Saturday’s International Dinner Buffet. It is without a single doubt, among the best buffet dinner in Kota Kinabalu City! For those in the same boat as us, the main reason is probably because of the price, which is absolutely a better value for the total number of dishes you get to see and eat!
However, we rather put that Whole Roast Lamb as the main factor as by far it’s the best that we’ve sampled. It came down to the taste of the meat, the texture and the aroma coming out of it while it’s being roasted.
For die-hard fans, the process of roasting and consuming Whole Roast Lamb is pretty much an institution, people ‘religiously’ lining-up for the best part. People enjoy watching the carving process and then will place the most unbelievable requests to the carvers (chefs), asking for bits of charred skin, the fat part and its red meat.
Great Whole Roast Lamb must be moist, tender, juicy, succulent salty and sweet. That were the characteristics we’ve discovered at Promenade Cafe while consuming the Whole Roast Lamb during last Saturday’s Buffet Dinner. Simply put, it’s great!
It’s not an easy task to please hundreds of buffet diners in one single session. All Hoteliers knows that. The best way to do that probably is to throw-in high quality, generous buffet spread but with affordable price and that’s what Promenade Cafe is doing. Apart from that alluring, beautiful and delicious Whole Roast Lamb, there are so many other food items to choose from.
6.30 PM to 10.00 PM is one really long time to savor the dishes at Promenade Cafe’s dinner buffet. Believe us, by the time you are almost full, there will be some other parts that you have yet to venture! When you are about to exit, you will see some other delicious food and you will have no one to blame but yourself for not being able to savor it!
Live Cooking Stations
Right next to the Whole Roast Lamb station is the BBQ Station. Diners are invited to pick their own raw BBQ items and hand it over to the Chef in charge. Simply wait there or signal the Chef that you will come back in a while to which we suggest you do so that you will have ample time to make one big round, ‘studying’ religiously the buffet spread!
One mandatory pit-stop is at the Satay Station! We are pretty sure that you don’t want to miss eating that tender and tasty Satay. Be it Beef of Chicken (or both!), pour generously that Peanut Sauce on your Satay. Promenade’s Cafe Peanut Sauce is definitely among the best and has all that exact needed taste and texture. Simply put, perfect Peanut Sauce!
Next Station is the Fried Stuffed Tofu and Vegetables. Steamed fish meat is used as the main element, being neatly stuffed inside the vegetables. All you need to do is pick your favorite and the Chef will start deep-frying for you. Several type of dipping sauce are available but we think the best way to have it is by dipping it in light soy sauce with crushed bird-eye chilies! It’s best to have it while it’s still warm.
From the live cooking stations outside, this is the first buffet counter that you will get to see. During our visit, we were amazed with the food items being presented on the counter. We love that Baked Whole Garoupa Fish. This was in fact the most sought-after dish as it was incredibly delicious!
Other food items that we saw at this particular counter were the Crackers (Tapioca & Onion) and Mixed Fresh Fruits.
Across the first station was where we surprised by another great dishes; Fish Head Noodles Soup and generous supply of bite-size Mushroom Pizza and Chicken Popcorn.
I personally love that Chicken Popcorn as it’s crunchy, tender, tasty and had the right size (bite-size) which made consuming process way easier! I had this in between main courses and desserts while watching all that diners movement!
The main courses are placed on a large buffet counter, kind of an island and that’s pretty clever as it allows diners to easily move in circle. This is the counter that your eyes need to be a little bit sharp as all yum delicious foods (main course) are to be found here.
If you come and it’s full-house, fret not as all empty buffet dishes will be refilled soonest possible by the staff. Again, menu is rotated each week so what you will be seeing during your visit might be something different than what we saw.

The essential; beverage station. During our visit, there were 3 types of cool refreshing drinks served, namely- Lychee Cordial, Orange Cordial and Rose Cordial. Malaysian favourite, Teh Tarik was served as well as selected biscuits to go along with.
Another interesting buffet station is the Appetizers/Starters. There were so many choices that we’re a bit clueless where to begin with. Honestly, whatever we had that night was not in orderly pattern as we went along as we like to. In between main course and dessert, there was appetizer on our table! While we were enjoying dessert, there were also 2-3 main courses on the table! It’s buffet anyway. Back to the Appetizer Station..

This is another favorite spot for many buffet diners. There were just so many choices that evening and it will be that way for the rest of other evenings. All were just amazingly and heavenly delicious. Just when you think you had enough dessert, your mind will tell you that there’s another cake that you should try.

Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu is known for its talented Chefs and we had the opportunity to personally meet Chef Leonard Lim; Senior Sous Chef. He is one of the many Chefs at Promenade Cafe that oversees the Kitchen Operation and ensuring both ala carte and buffet dishes are of high quality.
This year is his 4th year with Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu. Before joining Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu, he was studying in Kuala Lumpur and soon after joined Novotel 1Borneo for 2 years. According to Chef Leonard Lim, the Whole Roast Lamb is the main specialty for Saturdays and Public Holidays International Buffet Dinner. The BBQ is also most sought-after by diners.
He added that extensive BBQ food items are available during Fridays International Buffet Dinner while on Sundays, the main star is Seafood. Chef Leonard Lim was also the Chef who meticulously prepared and cooked 7 ala carte dishes for us (Apart from buffet, we ordered 7 dishes from the ala carte menu and we will be featuring that in the next article).
While there are many buffets available in Kota Kinabalu City, we do think that buffet fans should try the International Buffet Dinner at Promenade Cafe, Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu. It cost only RM98 for Weekends and Public Holidays buffets while from Mondays to Thursdays, its only RM88. Though it’s cheaper than some other 5-star hotels, the buffet spread is generous and most importantly delicious.
Staff were amazing as they worked diligently, making rounds to ensure diners comfort and satisfaction. Staff were pretty efficient in refilling all empty buffet containers. All of them smiled genuinely and most importantly they made guests happy. Dining ambiance was another great factor. The lighting’s perfect. Tables and chairs are neatly arranged to provide space for the ‘food hunters’ to walk around. Overall, we were happy with what we’ve seen, experienced and consumed!
