There is significant difference between good and great hotel. Finding a great hotel to stay in for few nights is one mammoth task but in Sandakan, Sabah, it’s actually not. The TripAdvisor Community listed Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan as the Number 1 hotel in the entire Sandakan District. Being members of TripAdvisor community and after reading all that positive reviews, our team decided to see for ourselves the offerings by this property to its most discerning guests, such as us. We will be presenting to the readers, each layer of this property, in details, presented in separate entries. This entry (Hotel Review) is particularly about the Executive Club Room, our definite haven during our visit to Sandakan. The review includes the Executive Lounge as well, the breakfast and one awesome dinner that we had.

Check-In

Checking in at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan was pretty pleasing as we were acknowledged soon after we alighted from our tour transport. Though we traveled light, concierge insisted to help us with our hand carry bags. We politely rejected his offer but he escorted us all the way to the check-in desk anyway. The Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan  was the first stay that we have had in the Four Points by Sheraton brand in Malaysia. We did a number of times, overseas.

Check in was smooth especially when it was handled by a team of professional receptionists. The entire team were polite, friendly and had genuine smiles, we must say. Of all, we couldn’t help noticing the person in charge of our check in, Reezly. He assured us that we will be getting our room sooner than we thought. Rooms were being prepared at the same time we arrived as big number of guests had just checked out. We were invited by Reezly to wait for our room at the Executive Lounge but we chose to be seated at the lobby waiting area.

Complimentary Infused and Iced refreshing water being prepared daily for in-house guests and that is definitely thoughtful especially to those who are checking-in. While waiting for our key-card, we were mesmerized by the colorful setting of the Lobby Lounge, located next to the reception area. With such a nice view, looking towards the Sandakan Bay through full size window panels, we decided that having tea time at this lounge is to be listed in our activities for today. We love the soothing colors and decoration at this particular lobby lounge.

The Room

We were then given our key-card to our Executive Club Room located on the 24th floor. Wasting no time, we hurriedly went to our assigned room #2412. We actually felt pretty excited, obviously because it’s our first time here being in this property. Initially, we were skeptical about the interior of our room, the view, amenities and so on. We opened the door and we saw perfection in that room.

Perhaps it was not the best room that we have seen and stayed in luxurious hotels before but given that the room has everything that we needed especially the view, we were extremely happy to see what we saw and feel what we felt. Of all the features, we love that large window panel, giving us 180 degrees view of partly the town and the bay. Being on 24th floor, the said large window panel pretty much gave us the panoramic and infinity  view of Sandakan Bay blue sky.

With average size of 30 square meters (323 square feet), Executive Club Rooms comes with options of King Bed and Twin Beds. Ours was Twin Bed and each bed is of queen size! To add to that, each of us had 4 pillows. This room easily fit for a family of four! We spend about 140 days in a year staying in Hotels and the last thing we need is a small bed and one pillow. Lucky us, Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan gave us the perfect bed, a place to rest and sleep soundly in the evening. Its the Four Points by Sheraton Four Comfort Bed® if you must know it!

Another important feature in the room that really impressed us was the Executive desk. It’s big enough for us to do our work. Being bloggers and professional writers we need to constantly updating our work and that’s online. Power outlets are pretty much sufficient in this room and there are two on the working desk. Free WiFi in the room is one important feature too!

As travelers, we do appreciate even the smallest details. The 32′ LCD Flat Screen TV is big enough for us. While on bed, we do keep ourselves updated with the news from around the world. The chair by the window was where my editor spent most of his time in the room, reading his own written journal. Little details but still important for us, that’s what we love most about Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan.

Nothing equals to our satisfaction when admiring the sunrise view in early morning. From the large window panel in room 2412, it was definitely a breathtaking view and gave us that refreshing feel to start the long day ahead. There’s nothing better than to admire the view straight after waking up as what my editor did, slurping his cup of coffee before heading for the buffet breakfast.

Bathtub is one important feature for both of us. After a long tiring day, the best way to relax is to soak in that big bath tub. Large sink and large mirror in this bathroom are equally important as much as that large window glass that gives extra natural light into the bathroom. Though not so luxurious as one may find in 5 stars above properties, the features are sufficient for guests, keeping in mind that this is the best hotel in Sandakan.

Cookies and Fresh Fruits were given to us as we’re guests of Executive Club, again small details but it made us felt appreciated. When everything else are just perfect (though not that super luxurious), there is nothing else that we both need. All features complement each other. We’re in total satisfaction and happy with this room. It’s clean, great space with complete amenities/features and most importantly : the room comes with amazingly breathtaking view.

The Executive Lounge

img_5509

Located on the 1st floor, the private Executive Lounge offers Executive Club Room and suite guests access to a comfortable lounge area, reading corner, and dining room—all with unobstructed views of Sandakan Bay. During the day, guests can have free soft drinks, settle into an armchair, and catch up on world events from a selection of newspapers or magazines or take a quiet moment to connect with the office via free wireless High Speed Internet Access.

Every evening from 5:30 pm to 7 pm, guests can mingle among themselves over free cocktails and canapés. We had the chance to be at the Executive Lounge twice. Overall The Executive Lounge is of decent size. Although the hotel was quite full including the Club Floor Rooms, few guests actually came to this lounge for the free cocktails and canapés let alone the all day complimentary selected beverages.

To order, guests need to press the call button and staff on duty will come to the lounge to take order. We love this medium size lounge as it is located on the 1st floor where it was easily accessible to us during our stay, getting some cool refreshing drinks as many times as we want to! Sunny days anyway during our stay.

During the evening cocktails on both evenings that we went to, guests were served some amazing local and international snacks from Roti Jala with Chicken Curry to mini French Tarts. All day long (on both visits), fresh fruits and cookies in jar were served. It was wise of us to stay at the Executive Club Room as we had the unlimited all day long access to this lounge.

Breakfast @ The Eatery

img_5636

The signature breakfast buffet (630 am to 1030 am) is served daily at The Eatery located on 13th Floor. We both went here for breakfast and overall we’re satisfied with the buffet spread. The expansive and modern dining space has a lot of natural lighting incorporated into it. The open kitchen serve up made-to-order eggs and we both were loyal to this station, 2 days in a row.

img_5646

The selections were quite extensive during both breakfast sessions that we went to. Staffs keep going around, refilling empty buffet containers.

img_5647

This section offered some cooked items such as Fried Noodles, Fried Rice and many more.

Roti Jala and Chicken Curry definitely one of my favourite at The Eatery!

Dinner

Steamboat Buffet Dinner

img_5994

We were invited by our angels to one amazing Steamboat Buffet Dinner at The Eatery. The concept is almost the same as one other buffet that we went to which is Bakar Bakar Friday Night (Here is the LINK) where you pick your own raw items but for this buffet it will be you who will cook your own food. Simple, just pick and put all your chosen items into the Steamboat Pot. There are two types of Soup, Tomyam and Chicken.

img_5995

We recommend this Steamboat Buffet Dinner to all of you (if you come to Sandakan). Happening every Saturday night from 6.30 pm to 10.00 pm, the buffet is priced at RM65  nett (Adult) RM32 nett (Senior Citizen) and RM24 nett (per child). While waiting for your seafood/meat items to be cooked in your steamboat pot, help yourself with the other cooked food selections, from healthy options to Asian/International cuisine as well as delectable desserts.

Our Thoughts

Overall, our 3 days and 2 Nights stay in Sandakan was amazingly great. We love our room. The room was our heaven. The facilities, services and servings at both Executive Lounge and The Eatery (Breakfast) exceeded our expectations. The Steamboat Buffet Dinner was spectacular and made us crave for more sessions!. Would we stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan again? Definitely, a big YES for that question. Do we consider this hotel as a good one? No. It is actually a GREAT hotel. Are we on the same page as the TripAdvisor Community in regard to the positive reviews for this property? Have a guess.
