Thought of the day-“Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”-Miriam Beard

In the east part of Sabah, particularly in Semporna, the Bajau people, Putu and Lato are inseparable. Some of them have moved to Kota Kinabalu city bringing along their tradition which includes, Putu and Lato. Both are staple food of theirs, a must in their diet. There’s only one way to know what Putu and Lato tastes like, eat em’! If you are an adventurous person, gastronomically speaking, head to Kota Kinabalu’s Filipino Market. We went. We consumed that Putu and Lato. This is our story, in regard to that particular experience.

Al Fresco Restaurant is situated by the side of a beautifully landscaped sea-view pool. Al Fresco patrons enjoys outdoor dining with spectacular scenery and a relaxing atmosphere. The extensive selection of pasta and seafood dishes and famous wood-fired pizzas are complemented by a lively cocktail menu. We went here twice, both for lunch, on the first and second day of our stay at Magellan Sutera Resort. Though not that a grand restaurant, it is still worth visiting for its great food and affordable prices. Al Fresco is one of the many restaurants in Magellan Sutera Resort (Sutera Harbour Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah).

“The sea is dangerous and its storms terrible, but these obstacles have never been sufficient reason to remain ashore..unlike the mediocre, intrepid spirits seeks victory over those things that seem impossible…it is with an iron will that they embark on the most daring of all endeavors..to meet the shadow feature without fear and conquer the unknown.”-Ferdinand Magellan

Such a great quote by Ferdinand Magellan. A quote that inspired us to be a bit different when we write-up our experiences. Each new place gives us different thoughts and ideas, broader perspectives though at times challenging and seem impossible, we still proceed the journey which in the end enabling us to write-up the experiences. Same as Magellan, we have no fear in conquering the unknown. It was at the Magellan Club Lounge that we were once again inspired by the same quote. The uniqueness of this lounge at Magellan Sutera Resort-Sutera Harbour Resort, inspired us as well. The wooden ceiling resembles  the cabin of olden days ships, as if we’re sailing while lounging here. We might be imagining things but at least there’s a foundation to that. By far, this is the best club lounge (of hotels/resorts) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.”-Camille Pissarro

We had the chance to stay at The Magellan Sutera Resort, Sutera Harbour Resort recently. The resort is uniquely different from other resorts that we have been to. Some say, the difference is due to its unique architecture that is pretty much inspired by the Rungus longhouses of Borneo. For the two of us, this resort gave us that tranquility of the sea that we’ve witnessed from our own balcony. We felt so relaxed here. This is truly great resort in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. We love our room so much that we dedicate this entry alone to review the room that we stayed in for 1 night. A short stay but we both saw many beautiful things in this mammoth resort that always stay humble. We really mean that.

We were mesmerized by that breathtaking view of the South China Sea, with Islands that formed Tunku Abdul Rahman Parks, as the background. A postcard view, we must say it, seen through that big window in room 0535 at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu. We stood there, admiring the view, almost forgetting that we actually need to be somewhere else. It’s kind of being glued there, as if we do not want to do anything else other than being there looking at that picturesque view. This is one of the many Sea View Twin room available in this 5 star Hyatt Regency Kinabalu.

Afternoon Tea Time at The Lobby Lounge on Friday-September 16, 2016

IMG_5492

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”-Henry James

Afternoon tea is about indulging yourself in your favorite hot beverage. It is about the ultimate indulgence with the elements surrounding you and your company. We mentioned earlier that we will be having afternoon tea at The Lobby Lounge, Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan and so we did. The perfect ambiance of The Lobby Lounge with some amazing colors of the comfy chairs perfected the moment. We were hosted by our angels, Ms Yee and Ms Lily and they have prepared something unusual yet interesting for our afternoon tea, colorful Macaroons and amazing TWG Tea, not one but 2 kinds of it.

Philosophy & History

Let’s learn something

IMG_5490

Drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China but it was the Brits that started to popularize the whole thing about the ceremonial Afternoon Tea. It is trending in each location you go to. The concept of afternoon tea changes depending on the location but one thing remains the same, appreciation towards the serving : the beverages and finger foods. While some tend to have complicated and layers of things on the table, a simple cup of tea will do and it will be fun to sip it while casually talking with tea-mates. Some people will spend hours doing that, we both occasionally do, especially when our best mates are with us.

According to Ben Johnson (2016), afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

About The Lobby Lounge

The Lobby Lounge

Decorated in a bright, friendly style, The Lobby Lounge is the perfect place to relax and unwind any time of day. Views of Sandakan Bay create a light-filled backdrop for clusters of armchairs and sofas in orange, green, and purple. Join colleagues for cappuccino or espresso during the day. Enjoy traditional afternoon tea with fresh-baked pastries. Or share a relaxing moment with friends over a glass of wine, beer, or cocktail. Finger foods like buffalo wings, prawn fries, or anchovy fries are great for sharing. Gourmet sandwiches satisfy a bigger appetite.

About TWG Tea

TWG Tea is a brand of tea which was established in Singapore in 2008. The company promotes itself as a luxury brand. TWG stands for The Wellbeing Group. Branded as the “first and only upscale tea salon” in Singapore, TWG Tea sells tea, as well as tea-infused food, such as savoury items, pastries and desserts. It also sells upscale tea accessories, such as gold and platinum teacups. TWG Tea products are sold through the company’s outlets as well as in upscale retailers such as Harrods and Dean & DeLuca. TWG Tea sells over 800 different tea varieties from every tea producing country in the world.

Our Afternoon Tea

While our afternoon tea was a casual one and not that ceremonial as in Traditional English Tea, we kind of loving the moments especially when it’s done at The Lobby Lounge, located on the 1st floor of Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan. The magnificent view is still playing in our thoughts even after finished writing this article. A truly memorable afternoon tea, I must say especially when we were accompanied and hosted by our angels. Mind you, a casual visit or staying at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is not complete if one have yet to sit at the comfy and colorful sofas at The Lobby Lounge, enjoying afternoon tea while looking at the amazing view of Sandakan Bay.

The fragrant TWG Tea that were offered to us, refreshed us from that long hours of half day tour at Sepilok. We had 2 types of Tea, namely 1837 Black Tea and Geisha Blossom Tea. TWG Tea’s renowned signature tea, 1837 Black is a unique blend of black tea with notes of fruits and flowers from the Bermuda triangle which leaves a lingering aftertaste of ripe berries, anise, and caramel. A timeless classic, that is. The other tea was Geisha Blossom Tea which is blend of green tea and refreshing ripe southern fruits infuses into a fragrant cup that will calm and appease after a day’s disruptions.

IMG_5494

The Macaroons were lovely, though we are not into sweet things, we actually still enjoyed that Macaroons. The macaroons served to us were definitely simple but colorful presentation of beauty from the Pastry Chef that made em’. Perfect macaroons we must say that we forgot that we don’t normally consume anything nearer to that. We did! At The Lobby Lounge @ Four Points Sheraton Sandakan. Why? Perhaps it looked so tempting, the soothing and colorful ambiance of The Lobby Lounge added to that temptation, though we were quite full after some great lunch just 2 hours ago! Our thoughts were like trying to position the macaroons in between cookie and candy categories. The TWG Tea..uhhhh haven we say..

It will be hard to deny that the best place for Afternoon Tea in Sandakan is actually at The Lobby Lounge @ Four Points by Sheraton. The high quality and wide choices of beverages and snacks is equally important as the magnificent, colorful, vibrant Lobby Lounge’s ambiance. To add to that already validated factors in online reviews from genuine guests, the awesome view of that Sandakan Bay, will make you sit for hours.

img_5817

We had our wonderful, refreshing and aromatic TWG Tea with some lovely macaroons. We had our moments with our angels and planning to have more of that in the near future, fingers crossed. While I think of that plan together with @lan, we do have one question for you. The question is, when is your moment?

During both performances, on July 29 & 30, 2016, this particular team showed to the audiences and members of judges, their ability in being consistent, delivering the best and most importantly had all the artistic values. Coming in to the stage differently than the other competitors, they proved to nailed all the general values of dance competition (regardless categories), from the choreography, projection, execution of movement, technical skills and even left an astounding impression to all that watched both sessions. Having to perform a dance based on folklore background, their ‘story’ seemed to leave big impact to the audiences, the story of ‘Selkies’ that has at least some degree of  similarity in other ‘stories’ from all around the world. That was perhaps the secret of the success of the dance, a great story line combined with artistic values. Beautifully executed! Introducing to you the Gaelic Girls Irish Dancing Troupe.
