Good food is cooked with love and soul. A great Cafe is not only about serving that good food but is also a place where people ably to sense that warm and inviting atmosphere. Being inside, it feels like almost being at home. Feeling comfortable is the keyword. In the long run, people will only return to cafes that they feel comfortable at. These are the qualities of a great cafe. Kota Kinabalu city is increasingly dotted with new cafes, not all have that ‘great qualities’ but Garage Kafe @ Penampang Bypass does. That’s how we see it, an observation of ours that took 13 months to reach that firm conclusion.

Nasi Lemak 101: The Making of Simple Nasi Lemak

This entry is written after we tasted some yummy packed Nasi Lemak days ago. Nasi lemak is a Malay Fragrant Rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish and also popular in neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Indonesia especially in Eastern Sumatra, Brunei and Southern Thailand. Malaysian normally have this meal for breakfast but then some people have this for lunch and even post supper!! Nasi Lemak can be found in all parts of Malaysia, be it at street vendors, cafes and even in a 5 star restaurant.

A journey is incomplete without some great food and so our journey in East Java did have some stops here and there, enjoying the best of Indonesian cuisine. One of the most memorable dining experience was at the Kantri Restaurant which is located along the main road of Singosari, Malang-Surabaya. We just had some big breakfast and all the sudden we were hungry again and so our guide cum driver decided to made a ‘pit-stop’ at Kantri Restaurant. The menu seemed to have mostly fusion food but somewhere in between the pages I managed to see one alluring dish named as Ayam Bakar Kantri.

Sabah Food Awards 2016 : A great event by SabahEats- Mass recognition for the winners!

There’s one recent prestigious event, The Sabah Food Awards 2016 which was organized by SabahEats (Link to their Blog). The event was held on December 10, 2016 (Saturday) at Azure Pool Bar & Cafe, Le Meridien Hotel Kota Kinabalu. Apart from the winners, YB Datuk Kamarlin Hj Ombi (Assistant Minister for the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah), bloggers, friends and instagramers attended the event. The event is about giving recognition to the winners of each category and winners were voted by the public (mass) via SabahEats blog from October 12, 2016 to November 15,2016.

A great cafe does not necessarily need the most up to date interior and exterior features. At times, simplicity is needed in order to align the owner’s products and the expected crowd. Less is more, well, sometimes this philosophy works depending on the ability of the cafe’s owner to keep the customers happy and ably to understand their needs. Customers tend to look at the features of the cafe over the products, if it is best suited to their ‘soul’, they will sure to come in. Nowadays, cafe business is quite challenging, it’s so hard to determine the exact desire(s) of patrons. So, does simplicity actually work for certain cafes? There is one, right here in the city center, a cafe full of simplicity.

For the Dim Sum fans, here is one good news. The Asian Restaurant at Horizon Hotel, Kota Kinabalu is currently running the Golden Hour Dim Sum promotion. The promotion started on August 15 and it will be on for a limited time only (until September 16, 2016). We sampled some of the Dim Sum and in another coming article, we will be highlighting our personal thoughts about the taste and presentation of each of that Dim Sum.
