Our Travel Journal continues here at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center (BSBCC), Sepilok. The center is located next to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center which is a bonus for visitors as no longer trip is required. If you have never seen a Sun Bear, this is definitely the right place for you. We pretty much listed this place as one of the must-visit location in Sandakan. In general,  BSBCC is a sun bear rescue and rehabilitation facility being developed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It is therefore a great center to learn about sun bears and observe them in their natural habitat.

Located about 25 Kilometers west of Sandakan in Sabah, Malaysia, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is one good spot for the tourists and researches. It is a place where people are given the opportunity to watch the Orangutan up close in their natural habitat. There is a boardwalk that leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the Orangutan are fed milk and bananas twice a day at 10 am and 3 pm by the rangers. According to the Sabah Wildlife Department official website, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is funded by the Sabah Government. The reserve is named after the two rivers flowing into the Sandakan Bay. The aim of Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is to return orphaned, injured or displaced orangutans back to the wild.

Our Travel Journal continues with one amazing feature in regard to Environmental Education (EE), right here in Sandakan, Sabah. Welcome to the Rainforest Discovery Center (RDC), Sepilok. RDC evolved from small, cozy environmental education center in 1996 into one of Sabah’s most popular EE centers. It is in within the famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, home of the orang utans at the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. The RDC is managed by the Sabah Forestry Department. Thanks to Gary of Borneo Sandakan Tours, we finally were able to visit this place after skipping it in our previous visits to Sandakan.

Pushing other big names in the aviation industry, AirAsia is again the Asia & World’s Best Low Cost Airline for 7th consecutive year. We are happy to see that AirAsia is servicing the route from Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. For our recent trip from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, we chose to depart on the earliest AirAsia flight which was at 0700 HRS. The reason, hoping to see that majestic Mount Kinabalu from inside the plane. Being a budget airline, the airline is about a straight forward service, you get what you paid for, it’s a no frills airline but it gets you to the destination. Traveling to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu is now made easier by AirAsia. There are several flights to choose from, be it early morning, mid day or early evening. This entry is meant as a guide for future travelers to Sandakan, especially for the first timers.

Located on the north-eastern coast of North Borneo (Sabah), Malaysia, Sandakan is the second largest town after Kota Kinabalu city. Dubbed as the ‘Little Hong Kong’ and has great links to the past, this town is easily accessible by air or road, from major towns in Sabah.  We traveled to this town recently and produced this Travel Journal, presented to you in separate entries. It is about how we see this town according to our own perspective, as travel bloggers. Much has been written about this town, from the history to the food trail and adventurous activities but still many will skip this town when they tour around Sabah. Honestly, we want to change that perception. Being Sabahans, we think that Sandakan has much better offerings for visitors to Sabah.
