Savouring The Best of Brunei Satay House @ Indah Permai, Sepanggar

For its impeccable Satay and Ambuyat, curiostraveller.com listed Brunei Satay House, Indah Permai  in Malaysia Delicious 100 2017/2018; making it as one of the 100 must-visit restaurants in Malaysia. 

Soon as we’re entering Indah Permai and saw Brunei Satay House signage, Sepanggar dizzying traffic fades into somewhat like a food haven. One will be able to tell from the name that this eatery serves Satay. Apparently, this eatery has a lot more to offer than Satay.

Coming in to its 4th year now, Brunei Satay House maintain its modest appearance. That being said, food quality remain to be the owner’s (Ag Shahril bin Ag Ali) utmost importance. It is for this particular reason that diners keep coming back for more. During peak hours, securing a table is almost near to impossible. These diners literally have faith in the brand’s ability to please their taste-buds.

Established in Beaufort by the owner’s parents (Tuan Ag Ali Hj Ag Anak and Puan Siti Afsah Hj Lagai), January 7, 2015 was indeed a proud day for everyone related to the brand as they saw the birth of a 3rd branch in Indah Permai, Sepanggar. The legacy of Brunei Satay House now lies on the shoulders of Ag Shahril bin Ag Ali.

There are more than 40 options available in the ala carte menu for diners to choose from. These many options exclude the beverages! Diners will be spoiled with choices of rice to noodle dishes. Turn the pages and diners will get to see the eatery’s specialties which includes Satay, Ambuyat, Kochung, Kelupis and Big Plate of Prosperity Rice.

Nasi Kambeng Hitam Berapi

We’re especially intrigued by a specific page in the ala carte menu which had Kam ‘mbhek’ special printed on it; with two special offers, Nasi Kambeng Macho and Nasi Kambeng Hitam Berapi. We had the latter. On the plate were Lamb Satay (150g) marinated with Sambal Hitam Berapi served with white rice and greens. The Lamb Satay had quite fiery taste, thanks to those birds eye chili. That’s just to our liking.

Nasi Butter Chicken BSH

It’s not that mediocre Butter Chicken Rice as in other eateries. This one includes Chicken Satay served with Yellow Rice and selected greens. Butter Chicken fans will be in for a surprise as the whole dish is unique in terms of taste, texture and portion.

Nasi Kuning Ayam Madu

Marinated with honey, the chicken was amazingly delicious; tender and juicy inside, charred outside and that gave this dish quite a distinctive taste and texture. It’s served with Yellow Rice or Nasi Kuning, Sambal Belacan and selected greens. For us, it’s indeed a memorable dish!

Nasi Ayam Penyet Brunei 

Not to be missed is this scrumptious Ayam Penyet Brunei which is served with white rice, tempe, sambal kicap, sambal belacan and selected greens. Ayam Penyet dish is so popular nationwide and we do think that Brunei Satay House’s version was among the best we have ever had.

Sup Isi Ikan

This particular Sup Isi Ikan or Fish Soup was quite tasty and we love it so much. It had generous amount of fish fillet hence the lovely taste of the soup. It’s one great option for those who are not into meat dishes. The soup was not watery nor overly-thick.

Kelupis

The Kelupis or Glutinous Rice Rolls at Brunei Satay House was one of the best we have ever had. Kelupis originated from Brunei and is also a traditional snack for people in Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia. It’s best to consume it by dipping smaller portion into the peanut sauce (sambal/kuah kacang). The Kelupis at Brunei Satay House is reasonably priced at RM0.90 per piece. Alternatively, one may opt for Nasi Impit (Compressed cooked rice).

Kochung

Brunei Satay House’s version of Kochung is indeed a must-try. The kochung (glutinous rice dumpling) here are perfectly prepared, wrapped and cooked that will make you wanting for more. It can be consumed as it is or if you insist to be different as we both are, had it with some peanut sauce.

Ambuyat 

Known as Brunei’s national dish, Ambuyat is popular in Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak, Malaysia. It is eaten with a bamboo fork known as chandas, by rolling the starch around and dipping it into Ikan Ampap’s gravy. The Ambuyat at Brunei Satay House is one of the best in Kota Kinabalu. The Ambuyat set here is priced at RM12.90 (for 2-3 diners).

Satay

Dining at Brunei Satay House is not complete if you are not opting for their tender and tasty Satay served with generous amount of peanut sauce. One may opt to have Satay by skewers or go for the set options. The sets are priced from RM9.90 to RM34.90. We had Set B (RM23.90) which had 8 Chicken Satay, 8 Beef Satay, Nasi Impit, Onion and French Fries.

For beverages, we opted for ABC Special, Blue Ocean, Thai Green Tea, Milo Tabur Special, Choco BSH Smoothies and Bandung BSH. All of the beverages were great in taste and presentation.

Dining here was not really about that generous servings of Satay, Ambuyat and other dishes. It’s beyond that. It’s about how far foods at Brunei Satay House were able to make us keep coming back for more. It’s about that satisfaction towards the quality of foods served to us; the satisfaction derived from that awesome dishes we savoured at Brunei Satay House, Indah Permai.
