Ongoing promotion until 30 April 2018

No, it’s not that monotonous and ‘orthodox’ Shell Out where staff will come with a bag load of cooked seafood items and things being placed randomly on the table. Don’t expect things to get messy here as what you get to see in other Shell Out promotions. This is Latest Recipe @ Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu’s own version of Shell Out; properly presented on a plate but you are welcome to use your hands if you want to.

Latest Recipe at Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu is widely well-known for 2 reasons: its great buffets and equally interesting, delicious ala carte dishes. Their ala carte choices offers a refreshed and modern interpretation of local and international menu with specific direction towards two important elements; Fresh and Organic.

Latest Recipe at Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu is an all-day dining restaurant that features a geometric design wood-accent floor, bronze-mirrored columns, dark wood panel walls and an illuminating chandelier of lights. It is indeed a modern interpretation of Sabah’s surrounding nature. The restaurant do have its monthly promotion. For April 2018, do check out their Shell Out promotion.

We were privileged to have a feast on this ‘new interpretation’ of Shell Out by Latest Recipe, Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu. The Latest Recipe’s version of Shell Out is about a platter of fresh shellfish served with Cheesy Rice and choice of Sambal, Percik or Butter with Curry Leaves sauce. It’s available on Monday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm and until 30 April 2018. This Shell Out promotion is priced at RM88nett per person. If you are in Kota Kinabalu, head to Latest Recipe and indulge in their latest promotion of Shell Out.

On the long oblong plate are Prawns, Mussels, Crab and Lobster with sides; corn, carrot, broccoli and cauliflower.  All of the elements on the plate are properly cooked to perfection but it’s not coated at all with any heavy sauce as in a normal Shell Out. The reason is; to give that freedom for diners to choose their preferred dipping sauce.

L-R: Sambal Sauce, Percik Sauce and Butter with Curry Leaves Sauce

In a normal Shell Out, the seafood items are cooked and together with the gravy, it’s put inside a plastic bag; waiting for customer’s order. It’s different here at Latest Recipe as the cooked items are separated from its gravy. In a normal Shell Out, the gravy is monotonous, you will have what others are having and it’s a bit messy. Well, not at Latest Recipe as there are 3 choices of gravy; Sambal, Percik or Butter with Curry Leaves sauce.

Gone are the messy table as the Shell Out here is properly presented; no need for the bibs or large napkins. Most obvious is no large plastic needed to cover the table! We personally think that Latest Recipe’s version of Shell Out is more hygiene as there is no need to worry about others touching the food you are about to eat! Honestly, we have always avoid eating out when Shell Out is the only option. We both are now more comfortable with Latest Recipe’s Shell Out.

The sauces are important for the cooked shellfish as it gives that much needed moist, texture and taste. We tasted all three sauces; Sambal sauce is almost identical to what you will get in daily typical Nasi Lemak; it’s sweet, spicy and sour. The Percik Sauce-creamy, sweet and had that coconut taste presence in it, probably for the use of coconut-milk. The Butter with Curry Leaves sauce is almost similar to the thick gravy of Kam Heong Crab dish.

Though we initially preferred the Percik Sauce, all other sauces actually went well with the cooked shellfish. We diligently separated the meat from the shellfish and dip in the sauce; each sauce to be exact. We then realized that Latest Recipe’s Chefs are trying their very best to incorporate local ingredients and taste into their food presentations. That is what Latest Recipe is about. It’s their elevated interpretation towards the monotonous, orthodox Shell Out.

The Cheesy Rice complemented the other main elements. It’s not heavily coated with Cheese; just a mild one, on both taste and proportion. We did have spoonfuls of each sauce and pour moderately on the rice and it did taste great! Another great way to consume this Cheesey Rice is to mix it with bits of the shellfish’s meat, pour spoonful of your preferred sauce and eat it right away!

Our Thoughts

In comparison to the normal Shell Out served in other restaurants, we prefer the Latest Recipe’s version of Shell Out. It’s more presentable, hygienic as it can be and most importantly we had the liberty to choose from three delicious sauces. The portion was big. We’re satisfied with what we’ve seen and consumed. While the shellfish items were a bit bland in taste, the sauces did elevate everything; in terms of the overall texture and taste. It’s not that monotonous, orthodox Shell Out; we’ve been here, seen it and tasted it. It’s one ala carte dish that we highly recommend to Shell Out fans out there!
