Hotel Jen is our preferred accommodation in Penang Island, Malaysia
Located in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage Site George Town, Hotel Jen Penang is indeed an oasis for urban adventurers. That’s us! There’s no other better place to stay in Penang other than Hotel Jen as it is strategically located in the city center; providing guests an easy access to any points in the Island. Exactly next to Hotel Jen is KOMTAR, one of the most prominent landmarks in Penang. What else? Shopping Malls, eateries, heritage buildings and many more. Perfect spot for urban adventurers.
Hotel Jen is a brand by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. Its genre; fresh, friendly and fuss-free. It is a place for lovers of life, fun, adventure and discovery. The brand is said to embrace the love for life and travel, helping curious travellers to leave boring behind, through spontaneous experiences, unpublished insights and unconventional perspectives. Launched in 2014, Hotel Jen offers a number of vibrant hotels across Asia Pacific which includes Hotel Jen Penang, Malaysia. This hotel is formerly known as Shangri-La Hotel and then Traders Hotel.
Rooms at Jen Hotel Penang offers a view of historical George Town. Depending on which floor of your room is, you will get that feel of being in a historical city by just looking at the view from your room. Ours was on a higher floor thus enabling us to have that birds eye view of George Town. It felt like there’s a sudden ‘call’ for us to unpack our bags and start exploring the alleys; locating murals or discover new hipster cafes, or perhaps lining-up for Nasi Kandar, doing things that Urban Adventurers do.
Our Deluxe Room is of 28 sqm in size with comfortable King Size Bed, 4 pillows with extras in the wardrobe! There’s a proper writing desk, perfect for us to do our work before bedtime. Fast free WiFi that needs no lengthy registration is available as well as PressReader app that provide access to more than 2,000 newspapers and magazines. The mini fridge was purposely left empty so that we can stock our own treats.
And as in any other preferred hotels of us, we love the fact that it’s pretty much comfortable to work on the writing desk as it has that simple yet practical chair. Next to the writing desk is that space to put our bags.
The bar had everything that we need. Coffee, Tea, bottled water and even a small but meaningful treat by Jen! What’s that? Well, that’s for us to know and for you to find out.
Next to the mini-bar is the wardrobe. It’s not that big but it’s perfect for us as we’re staying for just 2 nights. Inside, the usual stuff as in any other hotels; safety box, bathrobes, iron and so on.
What we love most about this room is the customised wallpaper that features Penang’s traditional shop-house louvered shutters. The element is evident in every inch of George Town city. We’re impressed with the initiative to embed such element on the wall. Again, it is a call for us to quickly venture into the city’s many alleys. The other features available in other rooms are the trishaw and colorful Peranakan tiles. On another positive note, we love that light wood flooring as we dislike carpeted floors.
We’re happy with our smart en-suite bathroom. It’s not that spacious but it had everything that we need. Toiletries were sufficient with Jen’s typical bath amenities that actually smell absolute energetic. The shower was all right, the head and handle’s adjustable to the position that we prefer. A bidet toilet that is; just what we need!
Hotel Jen is just perfect when it comes to location. No one will be able to deny that fact. The KOMTAR is just next to it. Padang Kota is just 10-15 minutes walk. And so are Malls, eateries, heritage buildings and there’s even bus station at the KOMTAR, for those who are adventurous! We stayed at Jen for 2 nights. In 48 hours, we did quite a number of interesting activities. Here are three activities that we love so much!
Free ride to Batu Feringgi! That’s return transfer to be exact.
We took advantage of that complimentary shuttle bus by Hotel Jen that took us to it’s sister hotel, Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La. The resort is located at Batu Feringgi and guests at Hotel Jen are more than welcome to use the swimming pool facility. We did more than that! We went out from the resort complex and had a walk in the surrounding areas; the beach and the street.
According to Golden Sands Resort official website (Link);
“an outdoor Jacuzzi in the garden and two swimming pools with water slides are available. The resort also boasts a mini pitch and putt golf course for those that enjoy golf. Our well-equipped gymnasium awaits fitness enthusiasts. For those who wish to spend their time productively while on holiday, there are many daily activities, such as workout classes, cooking classes, craft making courses and visits to the George Town World Heritage Zone (by complimentary shuttle). The popular Batu Feringgi Night Bazaar beckons those who enjoy a stroll after dinner. Here, great bargains on apparel, novelty items, souvenirs and art can be found. “
The Golden Sands Resort has 2 restaurants that serves amazing food but we chose to check out the best that the locals were offering outside the resort complex. There are plenty of great local eateries with amazingly delicious foods. There are more of it in the evening, all you need to do is walk on the street till you find something that will satisfy your palate.
Coming with a very big family? Worry not as the complimentary shuttle is big enough, it’s a 40 seater bus. Just make sure you inform the concierge of your intention to ride on that complimentary shuttle to Batu Feringgi!
Be among the clouds and the rainbows! We went on THE TOP of Penang!
KOMTAR is just next to Hotel Jen. Walk a bit and take the elevator to the Top of Komtar, as we did! It’s our best recommendation for you if you are planning to come to Penang. How convenient that was for us as Hotel Jen is located exactly next to KOMTAR; the combo ticket that we purchased gave us that much needed re-entry, on the same day, of course. We went up in the afternoon, went back to the hotel, went our for tea and came back to The Top in the evening, for sunset!
According to The Top Penang official website (Link);
“Skywalk and Observatory Deck offer stunning seamless views of George Town and beyond. Located at George Town’s highest point, the open-air Rainbow Skywalk is at Level 68, on the rooftop of Komtar tower, offering visitors the thrilling experience of walking on air 249m above ground. Meanwhile the air-conditioned Observatory Deck at Level 65 also features a glass walkway that lets you watch the world go by below. Beside the views, visitors can find double rainbows that arch into a pot of gold, a horseshoe chair and a unique hanging musical orchestra. Also on the rooftop, Coco Cabana Bar & Bistro offers great tapas food and cocktails as well as a great view. Enjoy the feeling of being on the top of the world.”
Re-visited, for sunset view! We did it! We will soon be publishing an article in regard to our experience on The Top Penang.
Marking George Town…on foot! Be amazed with Street Art in Penang.
Be amazed with George Town city, a Historic City that covers an area of 109.38 hectares. There are more than 1,700 historic buildings spread on four main streets of Pengkalan Weld, Lebuh Pantai, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Lorong Love. We walked, do it if you feel like to or simply hire bicycles or trishaw. Free CAT (Central Area Transit) Bus Stop are available from KOMTAR and Ferry Terminal. While exploring the Heritage City, try your very best to locate that 52 steel-rod caricatures which retails the history of the streets and stories of its communities in local voices. We will be publishing a separate article about Street Art in Penang.
Dinner at Hotel Jen Penang
We had an awesome dinner at Hotel Jen’s Lobby Lounge. The dining experience was something that we are going to remember for quite a long time. The food were well-presented and tasted amazingly delicious. Staff at Lobby Lounge are friendly, attentive and informative.
Jen Signature Mini Tenderloin Wrapped in Smoked Beef Bacon: 220 gm Australian beef tenderloin, beef bacon, grilled in Churrasco style served with creamy mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables and grilled pineapples.
Satay with Peanut Sauce: 6 Sticks of Chicken and Beef.
Broiled Salmon Batayaki: Marinated Salmon with Miso Paste, shoyu, butter served with baby bak-choy, lotus root and grilled mashed potatoes.
Hainanese Chicken Rice (Roasted Chicken).
Milkshake: Just Banana
All food and beverages were amazing in taste. There’s not even a single flaw in regard to the presentation and taste. The menu is extensive and they have more amazing foods to offer to diners. What we’re most amazed at was the prices for foods. While it’s served in a hotel exclusive dining environment, the food and beverage here are affordable!
We stayed at Hotel Jen Penang for 2 nights. We’re pleased and amazed with everything that we’d seen and experienced. The room had everything that we need. The dinner at the Lobby Lounge was an unforgettable experience as the food were amazingly delicious. Location wise, Hotel Jen Penang is the best hotel in Penang Island.
It gave us easy access to the places that we intend to visit in that historical city, George Town. Most places are within reach, we love walking as we are urban adventurers, anyway. Most importantly, this hotel suited our souls and thoughts. We felt totally comfortable staying at Hotel Jen. This is the exact hotel that we will be choosing again when we visit Penang again in the near future.
