This is indeed an eatery with beautiful view of paddy field. It’s an eatery with open air concept that has 3 dining sections; the main hut, open air dining tables and gazebo like dining huts. The third is the most sought-after probably for its airy environment and a view to die for. This is Nasi Dagang Pak Malau, an eatery located along Jalan Makam Mahsuri in Langkawi Island, Malaysia.
Nasi Dagang Pak Malau started its operation on 20 November 2012. 5 years later, it has expanded from a small hut into an area that has a home stay and even individual dining huts. Pak Malau (Jamaludin Hashim) was actually born and raised in Kuala Lumpur while his wife, Mak Malau (Zuhariah Daud) is from Kota Bahru, Kelantan.
In early 2000’s, they visited Langkawi and immediately had a crush with Langkawi’s natural beauty. It was then that they have decided in buying a piece of land in Kampung Makam Mahsuri hence their food business started. Since Mak Malau is an expert of cooking Nasi Dagang and its side dishes, the business obviously concentrates in Nasi Dagang.
Nasi Dagang means “Traders Rice” and it is one of the most popular breakfast meals in the east coast (Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang). Nowadays, it is also a sought-after dish during lunch, dinner and even supper! It is almost similar to Nasi Lemak or coconut rice. Terengganu nasi dagang is generally white, while Kelantan nasi dagang is marked with patches of color as it has beras dagang, a long grain red rice.
Nasi Dagang at Pak Malau is best consumed with gulai (spicy and succulent curry-like sauce). There are several types of Gulai available here such as Gulai Ikan Tongkol (Tuna), Gulai Kambing (Lamb), Gulai Ayam Kampung (free-range chicken) and Daging Kerutub (Beef cooked in concentrated curry type : a dish famous in Kelantan). Come early in the morning and delicious crispy Fried Chicken will be on the table for you to choose.
Service here is straight forward. There will be no waiters to fully serve you. One will need to be physically present at the main hut and choose his or her preference gulai to go with that delicious Nasi Dagang. Carry your own meal(s) to your preferred table/seating area and your drinks will be sent to you later. Customers pay during exit to a standby cashier at the main hut, normally that will be Pak Malau himself.
While having your delicious Nasi Dagang with its side dishes, enjoy the green scenery of vast paddy field with hills and mountain as its background. Occasionally you will get to see some people in the middle of the paddy field, doing their work and even customers wandering around.
If you are wondering, you too are more than welcome to walk along the path in the paddy field while your travel mate shoot that lovely photos of you. Upload those photos in your Instagram, making your friends biting their nails.
Take a few minutes rest, try sitting on that wooden lazy chair and enjoy the breeze coming in from surrounding area. You will sure to be too ‘ lazy’ to leave the premise and feels like you want to stay there forever. It’s so calm here, far away from that any major development elements. Perhaps, it’s the place to get ready for your next adventure in Langkawi.
Those wishing to stay here for a day or two (or more) may do so by renting the Homestay unit that resembles Malay Traditional House. Pak Malau and his team will be more than happy to welcome you, provided that no one is already booked for that beautiful structure on your preferred date(s)!
Our team was privileged to personally experience the food and amazing dining ambiance at Pak Malau Nasi Dagang. We certainly enjoyed every moment of it and are looking forward to be here again in the near future. For its amazing and delicious foods as well as great dining environment, curiostraveller.com listed this eatery as one of the best 100 eateries in Malaysia.
