Thought of the day-“Great food needed more than chefs; it needed gourmet diners.”-Nicole Mones

Part 2 0f 2 (Rank #15-#1)

There are just too many restaurants and even stalls in Malaysia that offers amazing food & dessert. Some restaurants are being independent while some are in groups/chains, not to mention restaurants that being in hotels/resorts. Food stalls on the other hand are owned by independent owners and in many sizes. There is actually no exact standard to universally and precisely rank these food outlets in terms of the overall quality in food & dessert. Food hunters normally will have to depend on some experiences and recommendations by food writers/bloggers. This is a guide, our recommendation for all of you to find some great and food & desserts in Malaysia.

Through our (which includes our contacts/partners) dining experiences,we have compiled the Top 30 food/dessert in Malaysia, that you must try (if you happen to be in the said place). There were 5 criteria that we used when we finalized the list.

#1 The food/dessert originates from Halal restaurant/stall or at least run by Muslim owners or serving entirely Halal dishes (strictly no pork served)
#2, The price; affordable.
#3, we’ve tasted it OR at least a friend validated the said amazing taste, scored 9.0 or above in Happiness Point (Affordable, Clean, Tasty)
#4, the outlet is listed in any big plus valid websites such as TripAdvisor.
#5 offering value for the customers such as buy 1 free 1, free add-on or just anything that will make customers happy.

The process: For the past 2 weeks, we compiled about 1425 images of food and desert that we had throughout the year of 2016;shortlisted it to 100 images and later to 30 images. We then ranked each image by giving a scale from 00 to 10, based on 3 factors; Affordable, Clean, Tasty. The higher the rank means we remembered that food/dessert more, mostly for its uniqueness. Our intention is to share with readers the best food/dessert that we had in 2016.

Regardless of whether the food/dessert came from high end dining outlet or food stall, here are our pick for the Top 30 food/dessert in Malaysia. Note that we have yet to venture the amazing food in the states of Perak, Perlis & Sarawak. That said, we do hope to list some of Perak, Perlis & Sarawak’s food in the 2017 list, to be published early 2018.

*There are two types of food tied at the 15th spot

Location: Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan

Happiness Score: 9.71/10

Another Curry Laksa dish that we love so much, cooked with love, with amazing taste, presented differently from other Laksa Curry. Big portion, generous seafood, most importantly delicious!

Location: TLC Stall, Anjung Selera, Teluk Likas, Sabah
Availability: Every Evening
Happiness Score: 9.71/10

The stall’s operator have many different kind of Satay, from Chicken to Lamb. Their selling point is the peanut gravy as well as the tender meat of their Satay. Marinated for long hours, the meat has amazing taste, especially after being charred. We had satay everywhere but we keep coming back here as we do realize that their Satay is the best in Malaysia.

#14 Udang Asam Goreng by Rasa Utara, Berjaya Times Square

img_2139

Location: Rasa Utara  Restaurant Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur
Availability: Daily, from the ala-carte menu
Happiness Score: 9.73/10

Priced at RM 35.80 nett per serving, this dish can be shared by 2-3 pax : Tiger Prawns marinated in Tamarind Sauce, fried with Rasa Utara special chili paste till dry and crispy. The sambal was delicious, spicy but had that sweetness to overcome that fiery taste. The Prawns were fresh and since it’s marinated in Tamarind Sauce, it had that sour taste. Crispy prawns we say and it’s big in size.

#13 Maguro Tataki Salada @ Nagisa, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Sabah

img_3625

Maguro Tataki Salada, a seared salmon salad, which is priced at RM40 (Salmon can be substituted with Tuna). Ordered from the ala carte menu from Chinmi and Sunomono category. It’s healthy, the taste- absolutely amazing and delicious. A dish that actually brought us deeper into Japanese Cuisine.

#12 ABC Special @ Tanjung Aru Beach Food Stall

img_4245

A dessert that need 2 people to finish it. Generous portion, priced reasonably. Many interesting things inside it with scoops of ice-cream of your choice. This stall and all other stalls will be relocated to a new place soon enough as Tanjung Aru Beach will be re-developed. Get it while you still can!

Ayam Bambangan is an amazing dish by Chef Stimol Rondi. Happiness Score: 9.83/10

Garage Kafe is one of the best cafe in Kota Kinabalu City, serving Western and Malaysian cuisine. It was during Ramadhan Month in 2016 that we had the opportunity to consume this big portion of Sup Tulang. High quality broth we’d say, delicious and we’re still craving for second! Not sure if it is still in the menu, do call the cafe to check its availability. This Sup Tulang by far is the best one that we had in 2016!

#08 Cendol by Hj Shariff Chendol @ Seremban, Negeri Sembilan

img_0165

Location: Hj Shariff Chendol, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan

Happiness Score: 9.84/10

Inside the Cendol bowl (Special set), there were some red beans, corns, cendol (the green jelly), pulut (glutinous rice) and rich coconut milk. Together, it’s a dessert from heaven. It’s not that sweet but rich in taste and textures. It’s one cold dessert, perfect during hot sunny days. Among the best Cendol that we had in 2016.

img_4537

Location: Dreamtel Cafe, Dreamtel Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Happiness Score: 9.86/10

We are number one fan of Creme Brulee and we had consumed so many already. The Creme Brulee in Dreamtel Cafe is way different of other Creme Brulee that we had in other places. It’s by far the best that we had in 2016. A medium size cafe in a 3 star hotel but ably to have the best Creme Brulee, we dare to say in the whole Malaysia! We had this in mid 2016. Ordered it from the ala-carte menu and saw it once during Weekend High Tea/Lunch Buffet.

#06 Roti Banjir Special @ Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

img_0149

Location: ABC Restaurant, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur
Availability: Daily
Happiness Score: 9.88/10

Looks weird in the picture but then once you have it, you want some more. It’s the normal Indian Roti Canai but on top spread of half boiled eggs (2), curry gravy and sambal. Though Roti Banjir Special is easy to find anywhere in Malaysia, ABC Restaurant seems to have the best one!

#05 Malay Food & Dessert @ Kampung Pengkalan Nyireh, Terengganu

#04 Durian + Cheese + Chicken Curry @ Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

img_4211

Location: Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
Availability: Rare, seasonal & upon demand in 2017
Happiness Score: 9.92/10

We named it as the ‘it’ menu of the year, something that is so rare and perhaps not to be seen again in the near future. It was offered during DURIAN BAH promotion in 2016, not sure though if the Chef at Promenade Hotel will re-introduce this dish again in 2017 or maybe come up with something extra ordinary. It ain’t Lasagna, this is something totally new, introducing the combination of DURIAN + CHEESE + CURRY CHICKEN. Available for limited time only in 2016, this was an amazing Durian Curry Chicken with Cheese in a form of a Lasagna!. For its uniqueness and rarity, we listed this dish at #4.

#03 Roti Naan Cheese @ Tanjung Ria, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu

img_7080

Location: Tanjung Ria, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
Availability: During International Buffet
Happiness Score: 9.95/10

Roti Naan Cheese is easy to find anywhere in Malaysia but to get one with the X Factor is quite rare. At Tanjung Ria, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, one may get to ‘taste’ the best Roti Naan Cheese, and as many times as you want as it is included in the buffet spread. Alternatively, order from their ala carte menu.

#2 Fish Head Curry @ Krishna’s, Plaza Grand Millenium, Kota Kinabalu

c360_2016-03-19-15-49-12-688

Location: Krishna’s, Plaza Grand Millenium, Kota Kinabalu
Availability: Daily
Happiness Score: 9.98/10

The best Fish Head Curry that we had in 2016, in the entire nation! The gravy-thick and spicy, generous portion even for the medium size that can be shared by 3 people! We do keep coming here if we crave for Fish Head Curry. The restaurant is Halal Certified.

#01 Pulut Mangga by Pulut_Pulut @ Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

untitled-11-1

Location: Mobile, Delivery Service, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Availability: Not sure if they are still in business, the last time we had their Pulut Mangga was in April 2016.
Happiness Score: 10/10

This is the most remembered dessert, we love it so much and looking forward to have more. Pulut Mangga is easy to find all over in Malaysia but this one is definitely the best that we had in 2016! An unforgettable experience of eating that creamy texture of Pulut/Glutinous Rice with fresh and sweet sliced Mango. The Santan, amazing! It was during Food Mania Festival at Evolve Concept Mall, Ara Damansara that we came across the seller. Hope to meet them again soon! Fingers Crossed.

Conclusion

From Part 1 to this 2nd part entry, We’ve listed the Top 30 Food/Dessert that we had in 2016, the most remembered 30 Food/Dessert that we are looking forward to have again in 2017, God Willing.
