“I take a massage each week. This isn’t an indulgence, it’s an investment in your full creative expression/productivity/passion and sustained good health.”-Robin Sharma
How we wish that we can take a massage often as Robin Sharma. We previously visited Chavana Spa (LINK) and now it’s about time to experience the Mandara Spa Discovery package. Albert Einstein said that “The only source of knowledge is experience.” and so we’ve experienced the product and service by Mandara Spa, producing this review. How often do you get a chance to read a spa review by two gents? We believe, rarely. Most reviews were written by ladies. Well, this is an honest review from two gents in regard to the experience at Mandara Spa, Magellan Sutera Resort which is located in Sutera Harbour Resort mammoth complex. We visited Mandara Spa and after the whole experience, we dare to conclude that this Spa is indeed the best Spa not only in Kota Kinabalu city but in the entire state of Sabah.

Elemis Skin & Body Care Product
We were briefed by Ms Rashidah (Spa Manager) about the Elemis skin & body care product. Though we are both gents, we do feel it’s appropriate to share and spread good things about Elemis. During the recent launching of of Mandara Spa’s Elemis Hero Collection – Breast Cancer Care Wellbeing Collection Kit, Elemis Skin & Body Care Product of Mandara Spa has pledged to donate 10,000 pounds to the Breast Cancer Care from sales of its Limited Edition – The Hero Collection for total face and body nourishment. Mandara Spa Exterior
Mandara Spa is located opposite the Al Fresco Restaurant. There are few Balinese ceremonial umbrellas here and there on the way to the main entrance of Mandara Spa. There are smaller and bigger stones perhaps to indicate smooth flow of river water.
There’s a gentle reminder at the main entrance that made us stopped talking loudly. We were excited and keep forgetting that we’re about to enter a place that is full of tranquil.
Further outside the covered walkway to Mandara Spa, we noticed that the place is below some of the Magellan Sutera Resort guest’s rooms. The Spa is taking 2 floors with the treatment rooms being on the upper floor.
Again there are some unique features of Balinese Ceremonial Umbrella, stones and big vases outside Mandara Spa. Those features represents the feeling of calmness and elegance.
There’s another entrance at the back of Mandara Spa, giving easy access to those coming from the other blocks of Magellan Sutera Resort.
We saw a gazebo outside Mandara Spa with two massage tables though we’re not that sure if we want our treatment to be done here. Perhaps the best thing about getting a massage here is to be able to feel all that sea breeze although uninvited spectators maybe become curious and want to have a look at the on-goings!
Mandara Spa Interior
As mentioned earlier, Mandara Spa occupies 2 floors of the block. There are some amazing decorations on the ground floor. The reception desk, retail lounge, resting area and many more are located on the ground floor as well. The stairs going up to the 1st floor is indeed magnificent, made of warm and dark woods. Bigger stones are placed near to the staircase.
There’s even a ‘fountain’ and man made pond on the ground floor. The endless flow of water is beautiful and give that sense of calmness. It’s definitely great to casually lounge at the resting area next to the fountain, listening to the flow of water and admiring all that river stone in the pond.
The view seen from the 1st floor is indeed amazing. There’s a sense of Yin and Yang all over the place, not to mention the feeling of zen concept presence. Add that with the Balinese influence and overall that is of Asian characteristics being showcased in the design of Mandara Spa environment/ambiance. There are plenty of seating and rest area on the ground floor.
The retail-departure lounge is quite big showcasing Elemis products.
“Massage is the answer. Who cares what the question is!”
We opted for the Spa Discovery. The duration of the treatment was 1 hr 20mins and the cost (per person) was RM 299 (Normal Price: RM 450). The treatment is about Age-old tradition combines with the finest European skincare for a deliciously relaxing experience. It’s 50 minutes Balinese Massage followed by 30 minutes of Elemis Taster Facial.
Upon entering the treatment room, we were offered refreshing Jasmine Tea by Clement. Sazali then explained in details about the treatment and showed us the facilities inside the room. There’s a bath and private steam room in our large double suite with the nicest views of the garden and sea!
The amazing views from our large double suite!
Clement then showed to us some oil options to be used during the treatment. He explained in details the names and benefits of each type of oil (Mandara, Spice Island, Harmony and Tranquility). I chose Mandara Oil while @joehairie opted for Tranquility Oil.
We undressed and wore the sarongs. As usual we stick to our underwear and kept those disposable underwear as souvenirs!
Both beds are similar to other massage bed.
Soon after we were on the beds, the therapists came and started the treatment. They did keep asking if the pressure was all right, checking if we needed stronger pressure.
Mandara Spa at Magellan Sutera Resort is indeed a place with tranquil environment. We felt pretty comfortable before, during and after the massage. It’s more to being in pleasure palace rather than a house of worship. We applied such comparison as some Spas that we’ve been to are so monotonous in terms of environment and ambiance that almost mimicking the house of worship. We felt the presence of Asian characteristics in Mandara Spa’s decor. Same as Chavana Spa, the Balinese feature is pretty dominant here followed by other Asian influences. Mandara Spa is designed in such a proper way that made us amazed up to this moment.
The treatment was amazing. We felt relaxed during the entire duration of the treatment. The first part was the Balinese Massage. The therapists did their job perfectly as they managed to find the exact spots and applied the right amount of pressure. The facial treatment was great as well. Elemis products were gently applied and caressed, right on the face. We felt rejuvenate after the facial treatment, fresh and as if our faces were glowing that entire day. At times we fell asleep during the treatment, a sign that the therapists managed to give calming and gentle massage.
Overall, we enjoyed our moment here and we are sure to come back for more. The facilities at Mandara Spa are amazing and service is top-notch. With that said, Mandara Spa is undeniably the best Spa in Sabah. We therefore recommend this particular spa if you are looking for high quality massage cum treatment. Without a doubt, it is also one of the best Spa that we’ve been to in the entire globe!
