“The real purpose of giving massage is to foster depth of feeling for one another in order to bring out the love that often lies buried beneath the pain of everyday suffering.”-Robert Calvert
There is one great Spa at Pacific Sutera Hotel. It is said to be among the best of the best in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, that offers expansive massage menu to its clientele. We’re about to check out from Pacific Sutera Hotel but before that we need to be pampered by some skillful and talented therapists. We need that magic touch that is ably to give us the right pressure, especially at the back. We worked hard the whole year, we deserved the pampering. Then we heard good things about Chavana Spa. We want that massage badly. We also thought that will be another great way to conclude our stay at Pacific Sutera Hotel, getting that magic touch by professional therapists! A great travelogue need a good ending anyway.
About Chavana Spa
“We are very excited for the opportunity to continue our collaboration with the Sutera Harbour Group, since Mandara Spa first opened at The Magellan Sutera Resort in 1999. With a new spa brand and upgraded facilities, we look forward to continue offering exceptional spa services to guests of this new location.” Jeff Mathews, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mandara Spa Asia Limited (Press release statement on October 1, 2014)
The Spa facility is located at The Pacific Sutera Hotel. It was known as Body Senses by Mandara and later has been rebranded as Chavana Spa. Chavana Spa’s decor is modern simplicity with influences of its Balinese origin. Design elements include stonework features, strategic lighting, neutral tones, light timbers, frosted glass and mirrors.
Fresh floral aromas will soothe and calm the senses, whilst Chavana’s unique blend of traditional Balinese Music with contemporary tones in the background will surely lull guests to sleep or a relaxed state of mind.
The Spa offers two double suites, one double room, five single rooms and two sea-facing outdoor spa pavilions. The two double suites feature an outdoor landscaped area with shower and an Infrared Detox Sauna or oversized bath respectively, primarily to cater to couples opting for Spa combination packages. Floor to ceiling windows, with frosted glass privacy panels, invite an abundance of natural light into most of the spa rooms.
Chavana Spa’s range of signature body treatments, facials and packages are inspired from the freshness of Balinese garden. Menu offerings include the four hands Chavana Massage, a fusion of global massage techniques and Elemis Spa-therapies, from the luxury British Spa and Skincare brand, inviting guests to indulge in result-driven treatments using superior ingredients combined with scientific solutions for skincare concerns.
Chavana Spa offers a streamlined treatment menu that welcomes all to experience the freshness and energy of Balinese Spa spirit. The Chavana concept is aimed at four and five star hotels and resorts and is intended to allow guests to enjoy a quality spa experience at a reasonable price.
The Spa layout
Getting to Chavana Spa was an easy task. From the Lobby level, we headed down one floor and walked straight to the left end side of the building. About 100 meters before reaching the Spa, we heard that soothing Balinese music and that fragrant smell of spas, something that we’ve experienced in Bali not long ago!
The fragrant smell? It came from that burning fragrance oil at the entrance of the Spa. Such a unique stone sculpture that really depicts the many Balinese characteristics! We’re excited already to imagine that we about to get that treatment by the professionals! We can’t stop smiling as we knew that we’re in the right place. Upon entering the premise, we were amazed with the layout as everything inside it pretty much resembles Balinese concept. We love the comfy wooden sofas! We soon made ourselves at home, truly a feeling of being in Bali, which is our second home anyway!
We were greeted and warmly welcomed by Mr.Kulkami Jastine, the Spa Manager. He told us that Chavana Spa aim is to harness the energy of the Balinese spirit to provide a fresh, friendly and comfortable spa encounter. He then assured us that upon completing the treatment we will feel relaxed, more radiant and full of youthful energy.
Mr. Kulkami gave us detailed explanation about the Elemis product, which is of a luxury British Spa and skincare brand. He recommended the Heaven & Earth treatment that has a 30 minute session of Elemis Taster Facial. We are men, being metrosexual, we do need facial treatment too! Of course we’re happy to have that facial treatment! While waiting for our session, we’re invited to lounge and go around the common area. What did we do? Take photos, of course!
One of our therapists, Mr. Sazali, showed us our amazing treatment room. He introduced himself then later another therapist, Mr.Clement came. With a big smile, he welcomed us. Clement has this amazing slang when he spoke to us. He pretty much reminded us of our therapists in one of the famous Spa in Ubud, Bali. We then were introduced to Ms Luz, a female therapist that will be in charge of the facial treatment. Great team! What more can we ask for?
The Massage beds are so comfortable, clean and neat. We both can’t wait to get on top of it and get that treatment!
Since our treatment room is a suite, there’s even a comfy sofa in it. It is meant for guests to relax and wait for the therapists to come.
Outside, there’s this big space with an oversized bathtub that is big enough for 2 people!
There’s even a changing room complete with shower and toilet plus a large sink on a marble counter top.
There are some sarong and disposable underwear..we kept to our underwear as we want to keep that disposable underwear as souvenir! Alternatively, you may go on without clothes, that’s what the brochure says! Be yourself, it’s your day anyway to be pampered with such great treatment and massage.
Clement offered us some refreshing tea and it was absolutely great!
Heaven & Earth Treatment
The Heaven & Earth treatment that we received is actually a package that begins with a Traditional Balinese Massage to unwind and thereafter followed with a Refresher Facial. The duration of the treatment was exactly 1 hours and 20 minutes with the first 50 minutes concentrated on the massage itself. The remaining 30 minutes was for the facial treatment. My therapist was Clement and @Lan being massaged by Sazali. Luz with some help from another therapist took over for the facial treatment.
How was the massage? We both agreed that the massage was the among the best one that we have ever received, much better than what we had in Bali, Indonesia. We felt so relaxed and at times were in sleeping mode, thanks to the therapist rhythmic hands, amazingly skillful and professional! The Balinese music played an important role too, putting our souls in peace, tranquil that is. The fragrant smell that came from the oil was pretty pleasing.
Both Clement and Sazali managed to found the right spot especially on our backs. We’ve been traveling for quite some time and a full body massage certainly will make us refresh from that tiring trips. The massage released all that fatigue. They started with our legs and then hands, moving slowly to the upper part of our backs. We felt like we’re in heaven!
Then there was Luz and with some help from other therapists (seriously, we still do not know who did the facial treatment part, as our eyes were covered and we were like babies, almost asleep!), the facial treatment started. Though we both were quiet half sleeping, half awake, we felt that gentle touch on our face, Elemis product was applied and gently rub thoroughly. More and more gentle rub and we felt quite sad when the treatment was over! We want more because it’s so good…
“Massage has had a positive effect on every medical condition we’ve looked at.”- Tiffany Field, PhD: Director, Touch Research Institute, University of Miami
We do go for massage regularly at different places. At times, we stayed awake the entire treatment as we were a bit worried that painful treatments were about to come or simply we want to see of the therapists were doing their job accordingly. At Chavana Spa, Pacific Sutera Hotel, we at times slept, feeling secure as we knew the therapists here are professionals. There was no any worries at all, we already know that soon after the treatment, we will be satisfied 100%.
We did feel refreshed after the treatment. We crave for more treatment! Obviously! The therapists were so professional that not they only gave the best treatment, they were friendly, polite and informative as well! Such a great team we say! The treatment suite was awesome with some Balinese features and such characteristics made us felt that we’re in Bali! There’s even an oversized bathtub waiting for us. We felt like we were kings.
The Elemis Product was great. It was ably to made us feeling rejuvenated. Luz gently did her job. The massage on the other hand, really put off all that stress inside us coming in from our long trips and heavy load of office work. @Lan was happy that his shoulder are better now, thanks to the magic hands of Sazali. Clement did a great job too! Our treatment cost about RM340 per person but the real value or outcome exceeded that amount. It’s a worthy price to pay for, the satisfaction is beyond that numbers!
Overall. there’s not a single flaw in the entire treatment. The Balinese music, the fragrance that came out from each corner of the Spa, the hospitality, friendship and professionalism were all the contributing factors towards our satisfaction. The Chavana Spa is indeed one great Spa to get some great massage or treatment. A place that worth visiting and indulge in their treatment. Choose any treatment from the expansive menu of theirs and you will sure not to regret about your decision to come here. We’ve been here, we experienced everything thus we know what we are writing about.
Such a great way to end our stay at The Pacific Sutera Hotel, Sutera Harbour Resort. We vow to come back for more and of course will be visiting Chavana Spa again to get that relaxing massage and treatment! We can’t wait to get another special treatment at Mandara Spa, The Magellan Sutera Resort. Foan in-depth reading about our experience, do stay tune for the coming-up posts! Cheers…
