In conjunction with coming Deepavali Celebration

Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan celebrates Deepavali and they are having the Kolam at the Hotel! The Kolam is a free hand drawing and a traditional form of art. These designs are believed to produce positive cosmic forces which will improve positive cosmic forces which will improve the lot of people who dwell in the house. We can also interpret it in the modern context as a sign of welcome to all people who come to the house (in this case, the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan hotel). They denote a prayer ‘let there be happiness and cheerfulness when anybody steps into the house’. Besides that, if there is an artistic design, nobody will dirty the place. It is supposed to prevent undesirable elements from entering the house.

Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan’s team of associates put this beautiful piece of art with the intention of bringing peace to this quaint town of Sandakan. Coloured rice is used in this artwork and was the joint spirit and effort of the staff. In his speech, General Manager Peter Padman commented that the hotel had neglected the Indian community and we being 1 Malaysia, all ethnic groups must be given equal attention. Though there was no charity organized for this particular time, Peter thanked the Indian Association of Sandakan for having come forward to assist with the loan of the artefacts.

During the simple yet meaningful launch of the hotel’s Kolam which was entitled ‘Endless Harmony’, guests were welcomed with the traditional fragrant rose water spray and grains of yellow rice. Hot ‘marsala cha’ (spiced Indian tea) was served to all and the sounds of the Indian drums filled the emptiness of the high ceiling lobby of the hotel.

A tall standing lamp was lit to symbolize glowing and growing bonding between the guests and hotel’s staff. The formalities were performed by Mr. Mano (The Vice President of Sandakan Indian Association) and hotel’s General Manager, Mr. Peter Padman. Members of the staff then helped to get all the little lamps glowing to symbolize their acknowledgment to getting the business growing as one community.

Any Indian welcome ceremony must be accompanied with the serving of Indian sweets and guest were treated to Coconut Candy, Ghee Balls, Kaysehree and Palgova which were traditional must-have and was very necessary to engage a sweet relationship between the hotel and the community.

The event ended with a spectacular surprise dance performance by the hotel’s own talented Bollywood Dance Extravaganza dancers and in appreciation of this bonding, the Indian community had presented the hotel with another piece of Kolam made by the local Indian residents.
