Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan : Afternoon at the Infinity Pool & ‘Anak Kampung’

Written by @joehairie
Afternoon @ Poolside Saturday, September 17, 2016.

Located on the 13th floor, it’s the only Infinity Pool in Sandakan that has breathtaking view of the sea and Sandakan Town. It’s undeniably the only poolside in Sandakan where you get to do so many things in one go. You can swim, admiring the view, relax and at the same time be pampered by the ‘Anak Kampung’ who walks around offering cold towels and thirst quenchers. You will get the feel of openness as if you can swim right to the bay. That amazing view and feel will sure to make you come back for more. Welcome to the Infinity Pool at the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan.

Infinity Pool

It is said that, “An infinity edge pool (also named negative edge, zero edge, infinity pool, disappearing edge, or vanishing edge pool) is a reflecting or swimming pool where the water flows over one or more edges, producing a visual effect of water with no boundary. Such pools are often designed such that the edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky. They are often seen at exotic resorts and exclusive estates, in advertisements, and in other luxurious places.” Look at the image above (Pic taken on September 17, 2016 at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan). Now is not that one infinity pool or what? It feels like both pool and sea water ‘are one’ same entity!

The infinity pool at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is definitely a great place to relax, swim and have your own moments. We came here on September 17, 2016 and spent the entire late afternoon, eating good food, slurping that young refreshing coconut prepared by Anak Kampung, swim and sunbathed! Apart from the outdoor casual dining area and bar adjacent to the poolside, there are plenty of lazy chairs with umbrella(s) around the pool area where you can relax, watch your kids swimming or just having the moment all for yourself.

The azure pool on the 13th floor at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is definitely inviting and one will be tempted to ‘jump-in’ straight after seeing it. Kids will be excited to know that there is one pool prepared for them next to the big pool. The main pool is good for laps and @Lan did a number of free-style laps.

The view from the 13th floor is definitely breathtaking. Awesome view of Sandakan Bay and Sandakan Town. We both can spend the entire day here relaxing as the entire poolside area is not only giving us the best views, the place is really a small ‘haven’.

Above is the moment we captured through our lenses where one big family enjoyed their moments here. Look at the happy kids! There was one family that left the area at 9pm because the kids refused to get out of that charming azure pool! We saw them at 2pm and when we came again for dinner at 7pm (The eatery), the kids were still playing around!

I finally gave in to the demand from that truly inviting blue water…so swim I did while enjoying that view of Sandakan town and the bay! It was truly one exciting experience and I will sure to do this again whenever I am at the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan. There is no other place like this in Sandakan Town, let alone the entire Sandakan district!

About Anak Kampung

While sunbathing at the spectacular infinity pool of the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan, guests will be pampered by the ‘Anak Kampung’. The literal translation is the ‘Village Child’. At hourly intervals, ‘Anak Kampung’ walks around with his trolley filled with thirst quenchers just to keep the guests happy. What more? At 3pm he walks around with a tray of cold towels scented with lemon grass – simply refreshing. Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan General Manager, Peter Padman said that the team is continuously looking for innovative ideas.

Besides, at 6pm, sampling of local delicacies are passed around to guests have a feel of Malaysian favourites such as ‘Goreng Pisang with Cheese’, ‘Beef Rendang’, ‘Local Spiced Chicken Drummets’, ‘Hinava’ (mackeral marinated with fresh lime juice) just to name a few. All these are available at the Poolside, daily from 2pm to 6pm. You don’t want to miss out the opportunity to experience the differences at the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan.

Our Experience

After knowing such service existed, we came to the poolside to see for ourselves this ‘Anak Kampung’. What did we see and experienced? We ordered two coconuts and straight to work this young man did, chopping the top of the coconuts, giving it more appealing look and logically to opened up a small hole on it. First impression?

We both love the preparation by Anak Kampung, getting that coconut(s) ready for both of us. Love that hat of his!

Don’t you just love to slurp that sweet and refreshing young coconut juice after some swim? I did that and Anak Kampung didn’t mind at all to send my coconut to the pool edge so that I was able to sip a little before continuing with some laps..!

Sunbathing for me is never complete without that coconut…and look at the burgers on the side table! What a great day for both of us, not only that we had some good laps at the pool, we consumed the best food and drinks as well!

For aesthetic reason, according to @Lan, I had to capture this moment in a form of a photo! That’s what he insisted so here it is, the image above! Don’t you think that coconut has the same inviting feel as the azure pool at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan? I have to agree with @Lan thoughts..

Here is the station that you will get to see at the poolside, preparing some snacks or snack snack as they said it. The menu varies from day to day, on rotation basis that is. On the day we came here, it was the The Burger Yummy day! Did we order? Yes!

Thank you young chef! He and his friend prepared 2 sets of burgers for both of us, Chicken and Beef! The size? Amazingly huge but most importantly tasted delicious, moist and pretty much worth the price which is set at RM22 nett.

Ramlan was the waiter who sent to us those burgers right to mini side table. Realizing that the space is quite limited, Ramlan took the effort to present our burgers beautifully on a food trolley. He put on some decorations as well! That made our burgers more ‘tempting’ and ‘inviting’…

Here’s how the burgers were presented to us, it was like getting the food ordered from room service menu, decorated as if it was for a spectacular buffet presentation! Thank you Ramlan, your team and of course Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan!

Same as the coconut that was given to us by Anak Kampung, @Lan specifically requested me to take photo of the burger with the pool as the background. Straight away I know what he was at to..he is trying to relay the message that ” right after the swim, have a bite on that juicy, moist, super size beef burger (chicken if you want)! Oh the fries as well!” That’s the connection and concoction of two photos (burger and coconut) with the amazing blue infinity pool that comes with a magnificent view. A place not to be missed if you are visiting Sandakan.
