Recently, we wrote about the Golden Hour Dim Sum promotion by the Asian Restaurant @ Horizon Kota Kinabalu. This time around, we introduce to you the 4 Chef’s Signature Menu by Deco Asian Cafe & Grill, located at the same hotel. The stars of the said promotion are Curry Laksa Noodle, Farm House Mixed Grill, Horizon Golden Chicken Chop and Beef Burrito. These 4 options are the same (almost) by the names with other food items that you may get in another eateries around Kota Kinabalu. However, those 4 ain’t the same in terms of price and quality. We’ve seen it, tasted it and we concluded the tasting session as ‘exceeded our expectations‘.

Chef Mohd Imbran

Prepared by Chef Mohd Imbran and his amazing team, the 4 Chef’s Signature menu is indeed brilliant as it is not only big (in portion), all 4 items are priced reasonably. These are the 2 elements (price & size) that have always being look into by customers before coming in for meals. Another important note that we want to highlight here is that all food items at Horizon Hotel Kota Kinabalu, Sabah are Halal. Halal logo stickers can be seen like everywhere, literally. Let’s have a look at each of that 4 Chef’s Signature Menu.

#1-Curry Laksa Noodle

Priced at RM15 nett, the portion is way big and most importantly tasted amazingly delicious. We were quite amazed with the thickness of the gravy, a sign that the laksa paste is made perfectly. We were able to detect all the important elements of Curry Laksa in general, such as the lemongrass, chilies, shallots, galangal, turmeric, spices and dried shrimp. Generous portion of boiled egg and 2 big prawns! The Sambal was definitely delicious and gave that gravy another distinct taste. It was not that spicy, at least for the two of us. All main ingredients were fresh especially the prawns and we love the fried Tofu. The coconut milk gave the right consistency to the gravy. Altogether, perfect match! Was this the best Curry Laksa that we have ever consumed? Honestly no, we had better. BUT, is this the best in Kota Kinabalu city? Yes and we are looking forward for a better one, if we fail, then we both must come back here again to validate our claim.

#2-Farm House Mixed Grilled

At RM30 nett, the price actually speaks for the quantity. Quite a long skewer we must say, with all the grilled items next to each other. Meats were tender and we love that grilled green Capsicum as it gave that pleasant pungent in both taste and smell. Generous sides, 2 types of gravy, well one is more to baked beans gravy actually but when we tried to mix altogether, it was actually nice! A typical serving in restaurants serving western cuisine but here the sides such as sunny side, corn, salad and that mini sausage were a big plus, most importantly will keep you going for the whole day! If you opt for this, you will have absolutely full stomach! What a generous portion!

#3-Horizon Golden Chicken Chop

A typical dish that you can find at any other places but the plus factor here at the Deco Cafe & Grill is the portion, way much bigger than what you are seeing in the above image. Fries were tasty, had enough seasoning, crunchy and if you deep that into the sauce, it’s heaven. Chicken was crispy but tender inside and the melting cheese made us craving for more. Salad was all right, not that great but not that bad either. Priced at RM22 nett, it’s worth trying, maybe not the best (overall taste) in Kota Kinabalu city but for the portion, we both must admit, it’s worth spending your money for this dish. The kids will like it!

#4-Beef Burrito

We both love Mexican food! And that Burrito was among the best we ever had! Seriously! That wrapping, the wheat flour tortilla was tender and not thick. The fillings? It will make you go for another serving! We did have that temptation. The price? Only RM20 nett. The beef was tender enough, juicy that we had to hold the tortilla carefully as not to drip down the juicy thing inside it and combined with the salad, it made that crunchy sound when bitten. Only if there’s generous ‘cheese and sour cream lava’ inside it, now that will be above Heaven. It’s scrumptious, sumptuous, succulent, every great vocabulary for food, fit this particular Beef Burrito. We strongly recommend this option over the other first three.

The dessert-Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Longan

This dessert, the Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Longan is not in the 4 Chef’s Signature menu list. It is actually from the Dim Sum menu but we purposely highlighted this dessert in this entry as we want to tell to our readers the amazing taste of that strong but pleasant Lemongrass. Indeed a truly refreshing dessert. We were able to sense that pleasant strong pungent taste coming from the lemongrass and some sweet taste from that Longan. What a great combination. Perfect to wash down all that heavy food we consumed.

Our Rating

For this particular entry, we will score only the 4 dishes that are listed in the 4 Chef’s Signature Menu. It will be an indication, from our perspective, whether the dishes are worth trying and which one is actually the best among the 4. We will not be scoring the X Factor elements of the Deco Cafe & Grill as we want our readers to concentrate on these 4 dishes as in the promotion.
