“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
“Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what’s for Sungkai.”-curiostraveller.com
Recently, we went to have our Sungkai/Buka Puasa or Break Fast/Iftar at Promenade Cafe, Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. We highly expect to see and consume some good foods at this cafe. We actually end up seeing more than what we have expected. Colors here and there, be it on the decorations or food/buffet presentation! In good way of course! We were pretty amazed on how much attention is actually payed to the details. In every single thing that we saw (or ate!), literally speaking. But did the food were good enough for the ever fussy curiostraveller.com team members palate? This is the main question to be answered throughout this particular review.

The Exterior & Decorations: As we see it
Be warned that our write up is always different from the other bloggers. When we reviewed a place and wrote up our experience, we tend to do it in details. Inch to inch, so to say, so that our readers will be able to have comprehensive and deeper understanding on the going-on. In the end, future guests will be able to make comparison and then decide whether to come or not. We entered the Hotel Complex with one simple expression : WOW. Yes, we wowed at each decorations that we saw. We were again surprised to have to wow again when entering the Promenade Cafe. The Ramadhan theme is like everywhere not to mention the feel of Hari Raya Aidilfirtir/Eid which being highlighted by using the Ketupat replica and many more. Green color are here and there, a color much associated to the Eid Celebration and of course the Promenade Hotel itself!
This is the decoration highlighted in the hotel lobby that has 4 sides with each side wishing guests A Blessed Ramadhan and at the same time creating some kind of excitement especially for the diners. Included in the decoration are some replicas indicating the excitement of soon to come Eid/Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
A clever design that portraying the traditional houses in typical Malaysian villages. It meant to tell guests that most Malaysians (especially the Malay) do return to their hometown during the festive season of Eid. The exact term in Malay Language is Balik Kampung. The hotel official hashtag #PromenadeKK is included as well!! Brilliant!
Changing color to orange, this particular decoration portraying how those Malay people celebrating Eid gather with friends and family, helping each other to prepare nicest dish for Iftar as well as Eid. There are some replica of Malay style traditional lanterns at the bottom of the decoration, famously known as Pelita. We love how the staffs creatively think of a good way to infuse both Ramadhan and Eid theme in one go. While admiring these decorations, we wondered actually what’s being lined up for the Sungkai Buffet. It’s time to see what’s inside Promenade Cafe.
The Seating Arrangement & Buffet Stations @ Promenade Cafe
Altogether, there are 4 seating/dining areas and certainly being cleverly designed to enable guests to wander around, choosing good foods from 8 stations. We created the overall layout below in order to enable readers and future guests to know what’s here and there. Our drawing is not using the right scale but at least it will give readers to see the entire layout of both seating arrangement and buffet stations.
This area is the most front seating/dining zone and being the entrance to the Promenade Cafe. The first Buffet Station is located in this area, which is the Beverages Station where guests can choose their favorite drinks from juices, cordials, famous Teh Tarik to coffee and tea.
This is middle section of the Promenade Cafe. To the left side is the Seating Area 2 and to the right is the Seating Area 3 & 4. In this particular middle area are the Buffet stations 3, 4 and 5 that features Malaysian and International dishes. Let’s have a look at some of the dishes, shall we? (Mind you we will only show some dishes and not all otherwise this will be an epic post!)
Buffet Stations 4 & 5
This particular seating/dining area is much closer to the Buffet Station 2 that features healthy choices. Many kind of Salads and Appetizers being offered at this buffet station. Let’s have a closer look at some of the Appetizers.
We must say that those seating in this area are probably the lucky one as they’re definitely closer to the Station 8 that feature delectable Malaysian and International dessert.
Some of the delish cakes
This seating area is closer to the Buffet station 6 and 7. There is an exit here that leads to the outdoor area where BBQ/Grilled items can be found.
Station 6-Steamed Item can be found here
Delicious Dim Sum!
Just look at that beautiful and yummy Dim Sum! Did or did we not mention about the amazing colors in the Buffet Sungkai 2016?
Staffs were 100% committed in giving the best foods and service to guests. They were all polite, friendly and most of them smiled genuinely. Yes, there were some non smiling staffs but we do understand the reason for being that. It was a hectic night, there were just too many people and at times few staffs began showing the fatigue sign. They are human beings and human beings do get tired when working in a hectic scene. Fatigue or not, they kept ensuring guests were happy with the foods, all the time.
We were amazed by the dessert line up, all of em’ are of high quality in both taste and presentation. We love the Cheese Cake! It’s definitely the best cheese cake that we ever consumed. It’s so rich with not even the thinnest layer of sponge thing in it, if we may say that way. It’s real cheese! For the mains, Nasi Briyani outshines all other dishes. With no hesitation, that’s among the best Nasi Briyani in the entire Kota Kinabalu city. We must mention the super yummy delicious grilled Lamb. Grilled to perfection, the staff manning the grilled lamb station, skillfully cut the lamb meat nicely and most importantly gave @curiostraveller the biggest portion ever.
We appreciate the effort by Promenade Cafe Team @ Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu to line up the best selections for guests during Iftar especially on the date of our visit, which was on June 24, 2016. Yes, there were so many guests and almost full house, as we saw it. Pretty busy time for the Staffs be it front or Kitchen team, they were all ‘running’ here and there to ensure guests gets the best from the various buffet stations. Our minor critic though, there were at times when certain dishes at stations were a bit left unattended in terms of tidiness. Spills were seen on some buffet trays. No matter how busy, someone must be on standby to clear any unnecessary elements made by guests. Quite an enormous task but extremely important. Some people are paying attention into the details and that include both of us.
We HIGHLY recommend Promenade Cafe as an excellent dining outlet in Kota Kinabalu City. We recommend the same place for your Iftar/Buka Puasa not only for 2016 but for 2017 as well.
We were delighted not only to had such an excellent buffet dinner experience (for our Iftar) but also for receiving the complimentary Durian Crepes courtesy of the Promenade Hotel Management. We can’t thank you enough for the delicious foods and beverages. The Durian Crepes tasted so good and rich with original Durian fillings. We will surely be buying that crepes in the near future as we are now addicted to em’! We personally want to thank these amazing and lovely people for hosting curiostraveller.com team members. Thank you so much; Anita, Jessica, Hansel, Alexander and Husin.
