Sawadee Krab ( สวัสดี ครับ ). Chicken in Thai Language is Kai and the pronunciation is Gai ( ไก่ ). Lemongrass in Thai Language is ta-khrai ( ตะไคร้ ) which is almost the same pronunciation in Malay Language Se-rai. However do be careful in Thai pronunciation, you might end up saying something different. Takhrai Chicken therefore is Lemongrass Chicken. In this entry, we will show you the yummy Takhrai Chicken, The Chicken Rice Shop version as well some amazing ADD ONS that we had.
Both of us are big fans of Thai Food. Recently, The Chicken Rice Shop Malaysia announced their latest product, Takhrai Chicken and it will be available for limited time only. There are plenty of Chicken Rice Shop in Malaysia. To get familiar with this brand, do visit their website, click HERE. Fearing that the current promotion might end soon, we decided to try this Takhrai Chicken and see whether the menu match up with the Thai version that we had in Bangkok not long ago. We went to the Chicken Rice Shop @ Suria Sabah Mall, Kota Kinabalu. Below is the promotion banner.
We will not be reviewing this Restaurant as we did with the other Cafes/Restaurant that we visited in Sabah. This is a chain Restaurant with many outlets across Malaysia. However, at the end of this entry, we will tell you whether the Takhrai Chicken is worth trying or just stick to the other choices.
The original Thai Takhrai Chicken is grilled chicken and marinated with the Lemongrass as the main ingredient. Therefore, according to our expectation (prior coming to this Restaurant), the Takhrai Chicken that we’re about to taste must have these 3 characters:
- Grilled and cooked until perfection with some slight burnt here and there.
- The Outside and Inside of the Chicken must have the lemony, mint and ginger taste.
- Small bits of finely chopped Lemongrass can be seen and tasted when eating the Chicken.
For those who do not have idea what Lemongrass is, here is the 101 course. Lemongrass has a refreshing lemon-lime taste with a tinge of mint and ginger. Fresh lemongrass has a delicate, floral rose-like fragrance mixed with a fresh and grassy aroma. Lemongrass is a key ingredient in Asian cuisine, particularly Thai, at home in curries, stir fries and noodles. It pairs beautifully with fish, chicken and coriander.
The lemongrass stalk is too tough to eat on its own so has to be finely crushed or chopped. In Tom yum soup, the Lemongrass is simply smashed or chopped and boil together with other ingredients. The presence of this Lemongrass will give the Tomyam a subtle citrus flavor. In this entry, we will tell you what we think of the Grilled Chicken which being marinated earlier with some ingredients that include Lemongrass.
From the menu (refer to banner 2), we opted for the B option which is best suited for 2 pax priced at RM 46.90. Apart from 2 bowls of Chicken Rice and 2 bowls of Chicken soup, the Meal B option includes:
Single Serve Chicken (We chose Roasted Chicken)
Nyonya Pai Tee
Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce
Homestyle Chicken Tofu
So we ate to the fullest. Below is the pic of the combined add ons that we had.
Were we satisfied with the Takhrai Chicken? Yes, we’re satisfied. The Takhrai Chicken by Chicken Rice Shop definitely tasted delicious and it had all the 3 characters, here it is again:
- Grilled and cooked until perfection with some slight burnt here and there. YES.
- The Outside and Inside of the Chicken must have the lemony, mint and ginger taste. YES.
- Small bits of finely chopped Lemongrass can be seen and tasted when eating the Chicken. YES.
We rated the Takhrai Chicken as an exceptional dish and worth trying. Although the Thai (Original recipe) version that we had in Bangkok was much better, this version by Chicken Rice Shop actually tasted almost the same. A+ to this Takhrai Chicken. Super delicious! Aroy Maak! The add ons were delicious as well and we actually consumed all the servings with no left over. If you are in Malaysia, try this Takhrai Chicken by The Chicken Rice Shop before it’s too late as this particular dish will only be available until May 15, 2016.
