Are you into Authentic Xinjiang Cuisine? Craving for the soupy or fried meals that have Chinese spices in it? You want it to be Halal Certified? No worries, Kungfu Ramen @ Jalan Laman Diki, Kota Kinabalu is the place to go to fulfill your craving. It was raining when we actually walking towards the Kampung Air area and by chance we found this restaurant. By my standard (and according to my taste bud) this restaurant is excellent for its menu, price and service. Affordable for all as prices are below RM 10 per item.
When I said it is excellent, I have to caution that those who do not like Chinese spices mix into the soup and fried items, this is not the place for you. As at the date of the visit, they have 37 menu items to choose from, from noodles to rice with beef or chicken or Lamb and vegetables. I asked the waiter which menu is in the top list of order, he said number 1 and number 3. We chose to have menu 2 and 3 (refer to the pictures). We had Fried Noodles with Beef and Braised Beef Ramen. The taste of spices were extremely strong, but I did enjoy the food, my taste bud, so to say.
@joehairie did not finish his food (fried noodles) as he said the taste of Chinese spices were too strong but if you are into Chinese Food and looking for Halal outlet, this is the Restaurant that you should go. Smoking allowed and they hey have WIFI!! The main workers/Chefs and their wives originated from China and they have this very thick Mandarin. All of them are Muslims. Only one of them speaks Malay. They do have local workers to help them. The price of the menu is fixed at RM8 for items with Beef or Chicken and RM9 for items with Lamb. Beverages are standard, same as the other local Restaurants. If you ordered Noodles with Soup, the noodles are made fresh (only when you ordered) and you can see the process of making the noodles right in front of you (if you want to-as what you can see on the streets in China).
I have to evaluate this Restaurant according to my taste bud as I love Chinese Food, no matter how strong the spices are. I rated the visit as excellent. Overall, the Restaurant was clean during my visit, all staff were polite although I had to deal with the chef’s wife who speaks no Malay or English. I had to showed the money (notes) and let her picked (funny though). The ambiance, great with some large posters portraying Inland China. My advise is, if you love SPICY food, bring your own Cili Padi (Bird Eye Chilies) as though the spice used are strong in taste, they are not spicy at all (The Restaurant do not have Cili Padi- they only have Oil Chili Pate). Overall, I enjoyed the visit, the food/beverages and services offered. Will I be back for more? Yes, to try another 36 items, one by one.
Whats my verdict? (Cafe/Restaurant: Stand-Alone Category) (Score: 8.6/10 )
Ambiance & Overall Concept: 8/10
Food-Menu, Presentation and Taste: 9/10
Beverages-Menu, Presentation and Taste: 9/10
Service/Wifi/All other ‘Extras’: 9/10
